About Tim

BrennanFamilyThe Brennan family history tracks with American iconography. Tim, born in 1969 at Hartford Hospital, his life, work and family have been largely focused here ever since. As he begins a run to represent his town in public office, he traces his inspiration to a story that starts elsewhere, however, with his parents, and their pursuit of the American Dream.

His father, Larry, was farm-raised in a small town in Northwest Missouri. He and his brother, Frank, helped tend the family's crops and livestock. Their mother, Elizabeth, a widow, knew college was the best chance at a better life. She worked tirelessly to see Larry get his diploma, the first in their family to do so.

On Tim's mother's side of the family, Christine Suchecki was born and raised in New Britain, the daughter of an accountant who took work as a day laborer and had been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Christine's mother, Stephanie, saw most of her family fall victim to the Nazis in their native Poland.

Against the backdrop of the Cold War, Larry and Christine Brennan, owing so much to the country that gave them hope and opportunity, earned post-graduate scholarships in 1963 under the National Defense Education Act, a government program that provided for an intensive foreign language study program for teachers at Washington University in St. Louis. Larry and Christine went on to teach thousands of children in the West Hartford Public schools for a combined total of 58 years.

Giving back through public service and devotion to family inspire Tim's run for West Hartford Town Council. A professional career with one of America's great financial services firm prepares him for the complex challenges of municipal government.

As an investment attorney for The Hartford Financial Services Group, the 200-year old mainstay of Hartford's insurance bedrock, Tim helps to manage complex investment transactions and international projects in Japan, Ireland and England. Additionally, in his legal work for The Hartford's defined benefit pension plan, Tim helps secure the retirement for many retirees of The Hartford.

As a member of The West Hartford Town Council, Tim will apply his twelve years experience in law, leadership and dogged persistence that comes from digging through complex documents, rolling up his sleeves and asking tough questions.

In some ways, his work for West Hartford has already begun. As an Alternate on West Hartford Town Council since 2004, Tim has sat on various zoning applications, including many hearings on Blue Back Square. During those hearings, Tim worked to safeguard resident interests by securing contractual promises from the developer to maintain a strong financial condition.

At the heart of Tim's purpose for seeking service to his town is his determination to provide a vibrant place to live. He graduated from Providence College, where he met his future wife, Deborah, and spent a year studying at Oxford University. With their degrees in hand, Deb began a career at American Express in New York and Tim entered law school at Washington University in St. Louis, the same place where his parents had first met. The budding lawyer added internships with The Office of the St. Louis County Public Defender and the New York County District Attorney in New York City. They decided to settle in West Hartford in 1999, the perfect place, in their view, to live, work and raise a family.

Tim and Deb have two children, Jack, age 5, and Madeline, age 3. Jack will start kindergarten in September and Madeline will attend preschool. On weekends, Tim can be found volunteering as a coach for Jack's YMCA soccer and T-Ball teams and is Madeline's number one fan at her ballet classes. The Brennans, who reside on Garfield Road, are members of St. Helena's Catholic Church in West Hartford.
